Mia Couto in conversation

One of Africa’s greatest authors

Mia Couto is Mozambique’s most celebrated author, and lives in its capital Maputo, where he also works as an environmental biologist. His first novel, Sleepwalking Land, was chosen by an international jury as one of 12 best African books published in the 20th century.

Mia Couto was awarded the Camões Prize for Literature 2013 and the prestigious Neustadt International Prize for Literature 2014. He was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2015 and in 2017 his novel Confession of the Lioness was shortlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award. His books deeply rooted in the political upheavals, languages and narratives of his native land, have been published in over 30 countries.

Maya Jaggi is a writer, critic and artistic director and one of Britain’s most respected cultural journalists. She has reported from five continents and won several UK national press awards. She writes for publications including Financial Times and the New York Review of Books, and contributes to the BBC, following 15 years as a profile writer and book critic for the Guardian Review. She has acted as an EU Senior Expert in Cultural Journalism in post-Soviet Europe in 2017, and as a judge for the Man Asian Literature prize in Hong Kong (as chair), and the International Dublin Impac prize.
